We were inspired, in part, by years of custom installations in the Bose automotive
division. We wanted to get that customized sound in the home,” Rabinowitz
said.
"This
technology was something of a Holy Grail for a long time," Arnold explained. "We
felt resolving the acoustic challenges of the room could have the biggest impact
on what people hear."
Have
a seat … and listen
Using
the ADAPTiQ system couldn't be much easier. You slip on special headsets equipped
with microphones, then sit in five of your favorite places to listen to music
or watch TV. Your Lifestyle® system generates special test sounds and the
ADAPTiQ system listens to how they sound in your room. The information is analyzed,
and the system adjusts itself for audio performance in your particular room.
“Think
of it like a suit. You can have a beautiful suit—nice material, nice color,
nice cut—but if it doesn’t fit, it’s not right for you. The
ADAPTiQ system is like a digital tailor for your Lifestyle® system. It also
gives you more installation flexibility, which is key. You can put your speakers
where you want,” Arnold said.
The
ADAPTiQ system only requires 10-15 minutes to set up, and if you change your room
around—or move the system to another room altogether—you simply run
the setup process again.
Testing
for success
Although
it's simple to use, the ADAPTiQ system is sophisticated in nature. The engineering
team knew it would take exhaustive testing of the final product to be sure the
ADAPTiQ system would compensate for practically any room environment.
“We
covered speakers with PVC pipe, obviously a pretty extreme test. We mounted speakers
high up on support beams. We even ran the system in a reverberation room, where
sounds echo for as long as five to six seconds. We wanted to ensure the system
was stable, accurate and robust, so we tested in unrealistic environments as well
as in the home,” Rabinowitz said.
In
the end, the ADAPTiQ system was a success on two fronts.
“We
developed one of the most advanced audio calibration systems
and it’s simple to use. It’s like having an engineer
come to your home and design your system for optimum sound,”
he added.
