Bose Sport Open Earbuds

Earbuds that don’t go in your ear

Instead of going inside your ears, Bose Sport Open Earbuds rest right on top. Exclusive OpenAudio™ technology directs high-quality sound toward you and away from everyone else, while leaving your ears completely open. It’s a more natural listening experience than traditional earbuds. Plus, others around you hear practically nothing. So, listen to your “beast mode” playlist, get your heart rate up, and stay connected to your running group — all at the same time.

Bose Sport Open Earbuds

Natural comfort.

Reassuring stability.

Bose Sport Open Earbuds were rigorously designed and tested for a stable fit. They’re purposefully molded to follow the natural curve of your ear, resting securely in place without covering it. Plus, a matte finish provides additional grip and reassurance that each earbud is secure no matter how much you move. They’re sprint tested and burpee approved.

Always ready — rain or shine.

When you work, you sweat. And that’s no problem. Bose Sport Open Earbuds were made to work as hard as you do. They’re IPX4 water-resistant earbuds to withstand your toughest workouts or Mother Nature’s surprise visits (or both). An industrial grade thermoplastic exterior provides strength, structure, and durability. And specially designed acoustic mesh in the ports helps keep out water and debris.

A new way to listen

While Bose Sport Open Earbuds aren’t the first open-ear headphones, they are the first to use OpenAudio™ technology — not bone conduction. This unique approach produces clearer, more consistent sound, without the vibrating sensation bone conduction is known for.

Do Bose Sport Open Earbuds use bone conduction?

No. Bone-conduction technology delivers vibrations directly to the inner ear, bypassing the eardrum. While this can be effective, it requires a tight fit between the bone-conduction device and your head and has significant sound quality limitations. Bose Sport Open Earbuds are different. Instead of sending sound waves through your bones, they use proprietary Bose OpenAudio™ technology to deliver rich, full-range sound while minimizing sound that others can hear, and they do not require a tight fit.

How do I set up Bose Sport Open Earbuds?

To power on the Bose Sport Open Earbuds for the first time, press the button on the left earbud, then press the button on the right earbud. The earbuds will turn on, pair with each other, and enter Bluetooth pairing mode. The status light will slowly blink blue, which signals it is ready to connect. From this point, you can connect using the Bose Music app or your device’s Bluetooth settings page.

How do I turn the earbuds on and off?

After initial setup, powering on the earbuds is as simple as pressing just the right earbud button. If left inactive, the earbuds will turn off on their own to save battery life, but you can also turn them off by pressing and holding the right earbud button for one second.

How do I find the proper fit?

Place the rear barrel of the earbud over the top of the ear where glasses would rest, and then rotate the earbud backward until it grips the ear well enough to stay secure. Even when the earbuds feel loose at first, they tend to be quite stable, so extreme tightness is not necessary. If the bud becomes uncomfortable, twist it forward to loosen.

For more help, check out this video from our Support site. You can also consult the instructions in the Quick start guide, or try the fit guide in the Bose Music app.

Do Bose Sport Open Earbuds support Wi-Fi®?

No. The wireless connection for Bose Sport Open Earbuds is Bluetooth only.

What is the range of the Bluetooth performance of Bose Sport Open Earbuds?

The Bluetooth connection for Bose Sport Open Earbuds has a reliable range of up to 30 ft (9 m). Performance can be affected by obstacles such as walls or metal, interference from Wi-Fi® or other wireless devices, and device manufacturers’ Bluetooth implementations.

How many devices can pair with Bose Sport Open Earbuds at once? What happens if I have several Bluetooth-enabled devices in my house?

Bose Sport Open Earbuds can be connected to one device at a time but can keep track of the last seven devices they have been connected to, dropping the least recently used when a new one is paired.

When in Bluetooth mode, Bose Sport Open Earbuds search for and connect to the most recently connected active Bluetooth-enabled device. If that device is unavailable, Bose Sport Open Earbuds will attempt to connect to the next most recently connected device.

If you wish to connect to another device, you should hold the right bud button for 3 seconds until you hear “Ready to connect” and the status light slowly blinks blue.

Can I make phone calls with Bose Sport Open Earbuds?

Yes. There are microphones for making and taking phone calls or accessing a phone’s default voice assistant like Siri or Google Assistant. It works much like the microphones found on most Bluetooth wireless headphones, designed for excellent ambient and wind noise suppression.

An incoming call can be answered and ended by pressing the right earbud button once or declined by double-pressing the right earbud button.

An outgoing phone call can be placed by pressing and holding the left earbud button to access the phone’s voice assistant and placing a call via voice control.

What is the purpose of the buttons on each earbud?

The buttons have multiple functions, which are described in full in the Online Owner’s Guide for the Bose Sport Open Earbuds.

Right earbud button:

Single-press to turn on.

Press and hold to turn off.

When on and in audio playback mode, use the right earbud button to control content: play/pause (single press), skip forward (double press), and track backward (triple press).

When there is an incoming call, single-press the right earbud button to answer the call or double-press to reject the call. During an active call, single-press the button to end the call.

Left earbud button:

Single-press to initiate the earbuds’ shortcut function, if enabled. Set the shortcut function in the Bose Music app.

Press and hold to access Siri on an iOS device or Google Assistant on an Android device.

How do I access my phone’s voice assistant?

Press and hold the left earbud button to access Siri on an iOS device or Google Assistant on an Android device.

How do I control the volume on Bose Sport Open Earbuds?

Volume control can be accessed in multiple ways on the Bose Sport Open Earbuds.

Voice assistant: Press and hold the button on the left earbud to control volume via your device’s voice assistant.

Bluetooth device: Use the volume controls on the connected Bluetooth device, such as the buttons on your smartphone or the volume slider in a music app.

On-product: Change the volume by slowly tapping on the center of each earbud. Tapping the right earbud will increase the volume and tapping on the left earbud will decrease the volume.

Can I wear just one earbud, or are both needed?

While Bose Sport Open Earbuds consist of two discrete earbuds, they operate together as one single pair. If you are accustomed to using one earbud in order to maintain awareness of your surroundings, you will enjoy the way the design of Bose Sport Open Earbuds allows you to wear both buds and still hear everything going on around you.

However, if you prefer to use just one earbud, the right bud may be used alone, since the right earbud houses the product’s microphones and its connection to your streaming device. The left bud cannot be used without the right bud present.

Can I wear glasses, a hat, a bike helmet, etc., with these?

Yes. Bose Sport Open Earbuds are designed to be compatible with typical helmets, glasses, sunglasses, and earrings.

Are Bose Sport Open Earbuds water and/or sweat-resistant?

Yes. Bose Sport Open Earbuds are protected against sweat, rain, and splashes of water (IPX4 rating). In very heavy rain, water may enter the acoustic cavity without damaging the earbuds. Users can remove water by shaking the earbud or placing a wet paper towel against the acoustic ports to draw water out. Users can also set the earbuds aside in a dry place and the water inside should evaporate within 48 hours.

However, Bose Sport Open Earbuds are not fully waterproof, and are not meant to be submerged under water, such as use during swimming or other water sports.

How do I charge Bose Sport Open Earbuds?

Plug the stationary charging base into a standard USB-A port on a wall charger or a computer. Then place each bud into its magnetically aligned charging port, as indicated by the icons on the charging base. The status lights will pulse white to indicate that the Bose Sport Open Earbuds are charging. Bose Sport Open Earbuds can be fully charged from fully depleted in 2 hours, providing up to 8 hours of continuous play. A 30-minute charge will provide up to 3 hours of battery life.
