Check to see if the original remote for the non-Bose device works. If the original remote for the non-Bose device does not work too, the device may be defective. Contact the manufacturer for assistance
Make sure the correct source is selected. Some functions on the Bose remote change if the source is changed. Press the desired source button on the remote to be sure it is in the proper mode to operate that device.
Be sure the soundbar is not blocking the device's remote signal sensor. The soundbar, when placed in front of the TV, might be blocking the TV's remote signal sensor making it difficult for the TV to receive remote commands. Locate the TV's remote signal sensor and ensure the remote has a clear line of sight to the sensor. The sensor might be located near the TV's power light or behind a translucent portion of the TV's bezel.
Be sure the external device accepts an IR signal. Some external devices may be remotely controlled by either an IR (infrared) or RF (radio frequency) signal. Try controlling the device using its own remote while blocking the top of the remote or by operating the remote in another room without aiming it at the device. If the device can be operated in this manner, it is most like not configured to accept an IR signal.
The device may have a setting or switch to change what type of signal it responds to. Set the device to IR control so that it will work with the Bose remote. If the device is set to RF control, it will not work with the Bose remote.
Try resetting your TV or connected device by turning it off and unplugging it from the power outlet for 30 seconds.
Note: It is possible some settings may be lost or take some time to return after a reset. Also a cable or satellite box may take several minutes to reacquire signal after being reset.
Try turning off any light detection or lighting effects the TV may have. Some newer TVs have a light detection feature that measures the ambient light in the room to automatically adjust contrast and brightness for a better picture, reduced energy consumption, or to emit ambient light from behind the TV for reduced eye strain. These features can interfere with IR signal reception. For information on turning off these features, refer to the owner's guide for the TV.
If the non-Bose device is a cable or satellite box and it was once able to be controlled, it is possible that the device's firmware was automatically updated. Cable and satellite providers periodically update the firmware of their boxes and this can sometimes negatively affect remote functionality. Try reprogramming the remote.
To clear the remote of its current configuration for operating non-Bose devices, press and hold the Skip Back and Volume Down buttons for five seconds. For instructions on setting up the remote to the operate other devices, refer to Programming the universal remote control.
Be aware that some menu functions may not be controlled by universal remotes because they are specific to the device. The device manufacturer may not have provided a command code for universal remote manufacturers to utilize in the code set for a particular device. Also, some devices may be too new to be included in the latest code set.
