What is Bose OpenAudio Technology? Open-ear audio explained

Bose OpenAudio Technology projects full, detailed sound across a small gap and into your ear canal without covering or sealing your ear. Your music stays crisp, clear, and private while allowing you to hear a coworker's question, the crosswalk signal, or your name called from the next room. The broader term “open audio” generally refers to earbuds that play sound to an unsealed ear.

Bass and volume have always depended on either proximity or a seal, which is why audio played near an open ear normally sounds thin and quiet. Years of research and testing resulted in our patented OpenAudio Tech, which delivers deep, powerful bass without occluding your ear canal while your surroundings stay fully audible.

Each earbud uses a precisely tuned transducer system that aims audio at your ear canal while minimizing sound in every other direction. The principle at work is dipole acoustics — the earbud produces sound waves that naturally eliminate sound leakage to others around you, keeping your sound crisp, clear, and most importantly, personal.

Deep bass is the hardest sound to produce without a seal in your ear. Our OpenAudio Tech uses high-excursion drivers to move enough air to deliver strong bass in an open-ear form factor, while proprietary SoundDesign Technology keeps balance, clarity, and distortion control steady as the volume climbs. From symphonies with every string intact to EDM with bass that hits deep, the full range of your music comes through the way it was meant to be heard, with content like podcast and film dialogue also staying crisp at any volume.

Want to hear the difference for yourself? Hold any earbud an inch from your ear, press play, and notice how thin the music turns at that distance, exactly as physics says it should. From the same spot, our open-ear earbuds deliver full volume and real bass with your ear completely open.

In most environments and at typical listening volumes no, the people around you typically hear nothing. The same dipole design aims audio into your ear eliminating sound leakage to those around you.

Crank your earbuds in a very quiet room like a library and the person beside you may notice sound is playing without ever catching a lyric or a line of dialogue. When playing content at the volume you'd realistically use around coworkers or on a commute, your audio stays yours.

If you've seen runners wearing headphones that rest on their cheekbones, you've seen the other open-ear approach. Bone conduction bypasses the ear canal and eardrum altogether, sending sound as vibration through bone into the inner ear where you hear it as audio. It has real strengths: voices and higher-pitched sounds come through clearly, which makes it a workable pick for podcasts and calls. Music is where it thins out, with a weak bassline and less of the subtle nuance a track carries. The transducers also need firm contact with your head to work, a pressure some find surprising at first.

OpenAudio Tech uses air conduction instead: acoustic sound travels through the air the same way you hear nearly everything else. The sound feels familiar from the first second and carries far more richness, from deep baritones to high falsettos, with the detail a producer wanted you to hear. The full difference between air conduction and bone conduction is worth knowing before you choose.

Movement is where the open-ear design  excels. On runs, rides, and trail hikes, you want to hear a car turning before you see it. The Bose Sport Open Earbuds bring OpenAudio Tech to training days with a soft silicone cuff that hugs the edge of your ear and stays securely put through hard intervals. Meanwhile, the lightweight, water- and sweat-resistant design withstands sweat and the environment alike. These buds are made to move with you.

Multitasking is its own kind of sport. Maybe a call lands in the middle of deep-focus work, or the doorbell cuts into a show, or dinner plans pull you out the door before the playlist ends. Each moment reaches you clearly while the music keeps playing. Our Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen) handle everything from the first desk call to the last episode of the night. Your ears never get sore, you never need to take one out for a break, and after a few songs you forget you're wearing them at all.

Style gets equal billing with the Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen). Each earbud wraps the edge of your ear like a piece of cuff jewelry, topped with a beveled metallic cap that catches the light as you move. Color options include Black or White Smoke, plus limited-edition shades like Chocolate Cherry, Olive Green, and Sky Pink for anyone who treats their earbuds as part of the outfit. The fit stays light enough to forget by the second song and steady enough to carry you through the whole day without a swap. When a song or film deserves more, Bose’s TrueSpatial Technology adds spatial audio that gives music a bigger, more lifelike feel and lends movies and TV a depth your screen alone can't produce.

How do open earbuds work?

Open earbuds rest on the outer edge of your ear, usually as a cuff, and direct sound across a small gap into your ear canal using air conduction. Nothing covers or seals your ear, and your surroundings stay fully audible. OpenAudio Technology handles the tuning that keeps your music full and private from that open position.

Can people around you hear your music?

At typical volumes, no. OpenAudio's dipole design cancels sound in the directions away from your ear, and ordinary room noise masks the little that escapes. At maximum volume in a very quiet space, someone close by may notice audio is playing without hearing any detail.

Is OpenAudio Technology the same as bone conduction?

No. Bone conduction sends sound as vibration through your cheekbone, while OpenAudio delivers acoustic sound through the air to your open ear. Air conduction preserves the detail, depth, and bass that vibration-based designs tend to lose.

Are open-ear earbuds good for running?

Yes. Whether you’re running on streets or trails, an open design lets you listen while maintaining situational awareness, plus the cuff-like fit stays secure through every mile. In our open-ear lineup, Bose Sport Open Earbuds suit training best with a stable hold and a durable, water-resistant build.
